Cengage Learning (EMEA) Ltd, is a leading educational
publisher and distribution services provider based in Andover,
Hampshire. The 60,000 square foot distribution facility
supports clients in education; academic; reference and legal
businesses servicing the global market.
To cater for their business expansion and to improve
efficiencies Cengage have installed a LogisticsPRO warehouse
management system to operate in conjunction with a new belt /
roller conveyor system from UPM Conveyors responsible for the
turn key project.
LogisticsPRO downloads order data to the UPM PC. This
information is then transferred to the UPM PLC bar code
readers to divert boxes to the appropriate picking; packing
and shipping areas. At each stage the conveyor system sends
data back to LogisticsPRO, keeping the status of each order
continuously updated.
Carrie Willicome, Distribution Director expressed her
satisfaction with UPM Conveyors particularly the on site
engineers who performed the installation with very minimal
disruption to the daily business of Cengage and said
UPM
provided an excellent service and finished product with
minimum disruption to our business
.weve seen immediate
improvements in speed and efficiency

UPM
Conveyors solved the problem of metering and conveying
powdered food supplements at a rate of 90kgs/hr with a compact
vibratory feeder discharging into a swan neck conveyor fitted
with a border flex PU belt having flights to totally enclose
the product eliminating any risk of spillage or contamination.
Hinged polycarbonate covers were also fitted over the complete
assembly incorporating safety electrical interface to stop the
belt and the conveyor was made in a combination of white ultra
high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for the side
members plus stainless steel for the support frame resulting
in a price competitive and aesthetically pleasing solution in
comparison to a conventional all stainless steel conveyor.
UHMWPE has FDA food contact approval and all aspects of
manufacture are carried out in house by UPM including
fabrication; programming and control build allowing total
control of quality / inspection and maintaining delivery
promises. |

10 conveyors forming part of a system
for a major multi national Snack manufacturer |
July 2009 |
10 conveyors forming part of a system for a major multi national Snack
manufacturer
As reported in the Spring Issue of PPMA News UPM Conveyors has
revolutionized the handling of food with their all plastic Ultra High
Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) construction belt conveyors
which meet the new Food Regulations and have FDA certificated approval
for food contact.

Roy Fowler of UPM reports a very successful first quarter in 2009
with orders circa £2 million pounds primarily for food processing
applications and of these orders the photograph shows 10 conveyors
that form part of a £150k order for a major multi national snack
manufacturer where the colours of blue side members and white belts
are in harmony with the customers house colour so proving
aesthetically pleasing.
The conveyors have hinged polycarbonate covers and will be mounted
onto grade 304 stainless steel support frames to form part of a total
system meeting IP65 rating incorporating barcode reading of boxed
snacks to be automatically assigned to designated areas within the
factory all controlled from one Siemens PLC with a colour touch screen
that is very user friendly having graphics for each function. All
software was written in- house by UPM to integrate with Datalinx
Warehouse Management and SCADA Business Systems.
All aspects of manufacture are carried out internally at UPM including
stainless steel fabrication and the Routing of 3m by 2m sheets of
UHMWPE on a new £100k fully automatic machine plus all control build
allowing constant QC checks and maintaining delivery promises.
The UPM philosophy is simple based on working in Partnership with
people sharing our knowledge and experience gained over 35 years with
UPM accepting total responsibility for turn key projects operating to
the agreed specification and to the customers satisfaction which is
the result of a Performance Guarantee allowing peace of mind with
reliability and trouble free operation being the corner stone of their
success.
